My grandmother taught me the basics of how to chain and single crochet when I was young. I made her a pincushion, but then lost interest in crocheting for a while.
I picked up a book that my mom had on how to crochet sometime around 1993 and started playing with it again. With it, and a couple of books from the library, I taught myself additional crochet stitches and decided (when we found out my sister-in-law was pregnant) to make an afghan for the baby. I am still amazed by how well it turned out, considering that I didn't know much about gauge (and still don't pay as much attention to that as I probably should). I chose a shells pattern, and crocheted it with a solid, soft yellow yarn, since we weren't completely sure the baby would be a girl. Since then, I have enjoyed making afghans for all of my family, myself, and a few friends.
I also learned thread crochet, around 1996. I made crocheted coaster sets for Christmas presents one year, and I've made several doilies. I prefer doilies which have color changes, but I've also made several solid-colored ones.
